This book is the popular Marty Mann’s New Primer on Alcoholism. This is a Fifth Printing from November 1963 with its original dust jacket. The book was signed by Marty Mann and dated in 1964.

The inscription reads:

To Don, We’ve come a long long way - let’s keep going, huh? Much love, Marty. July, 1964”

Marty Mann was one of the first women to achieve long-term sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and became a pioneering figure in the advocacy and public understanding of alcoholism as a disease. Her work was instrumental in shifting the perception of alcoholism from a moral failing to a treatable condition, and she dedicated much of her life to reducing the stigma associated with alcoholism.

Marty Mann was born in Chicago in 1904. She struggled with alcoholism from a young age, during a time when there were few resources available for alcoholics, especially women. Her condition worsened over the years, severely impacting her personal and professional life.

Mann found sobriety through AA in 1939, becoming one of the program's first female members. She credited AA with saving her life and was open about her recovery, which was particularly courageous given the era's significant stigmas surrounding both alcoholism and women alcoholics.

After achieving sobriety, Mann became a tireless advocate for alcoholics and worked extensively to educate the public about alcoholism. In 1944, she founded the National Committee for Education on Alcoholism (NCEA), which later became the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). This organization was pivotal in promoting the understanding of alcoholism as a disease and advocating for policy changes and resources to support recovery.

Mann was also a prolific speaker and writer. She traveled extensively, giving lectures about alcoholism and its treatment. Her efforts helped to open doors for other alcoholics seeking help, particularly women, and brought significant attention to the issue at a national level.

Marty Mann's advocacy work has left a lasting impact on the field of addiction recovery. She was instrumental in establishing alcoholism as a public health issue, influencing both policy and public opinion. Her efforts paved the way for later developments in addiction treatment and increased support for those struggling with alcohol dependence.

Marty Mann's work not only contributed to the growth and effectiveness of Alcoholics Anonymous but also helped transform societal attitudes towards alcoholism. Her life and career are celebrated for breaking new ground in the field of addiction recovery and for providing hope and help to countless individuals affected by alcoholism.
