The Liquid Cross of Skid Row by William F. Gleason

This is a first printing from 1966 with the original dust jacket.

An absolutely honest, fast-moving, often brutal story of life among the down-and-out alcoholics on Chicago's Skid Row — an area known to its inhabitants as The Street — THE LIQUID CROSS OF SKID ROW brilliantly dramatizes the plight of Skid Row's alcoholics as well as the problems of those seeking to comfort and, if possible, to rehabilitate these unfortunates.

Besides the alcoholics who live on The Street and the successful members of Alcoholics Anonymous who try to restore them to sobriety, the main characters in the story are Tim Trohan, 40, an ex-Marine, who, eight years before, left his family and business and drifted to The Street; and Monsignor Ignatius McDermott, the Angel to The Street's derelicts.

Basically, the story dramatizes the frequently frustrated efforts of Monsignor McDermott and of various workers in Alcoholics Anonymous to rehabilitate Tim Trohan and others like him. But the story is much more than the dramatic account of one man or of one group of men trying to save another. So authentically has Mr. Gleason captured the particulars of time and place — of Chicago's Skid Row — that he has, in the way of the artist, created a story of universal significance. He has rendered for us, not merely Chicago's Skid Row, but all skid rows.
