“In Remembrance of Ebby” — by Bill W.
Ebby Thacher occupies a unique and pivotal place in AA history. In November 1934, Ebby—sober at the time through the Oxford Group—visited Bill Wilson in Brooklyn. Rather than preaching or moralizing, Ebby shared a simple message: “I’ve got religion,” but more importantly, “I don’t have to drink anymore.”
Ebby introduced Bill to the ideas of admitting defeat, making a personal surrender to a Higher Power, and helping others without expectations.
This encounter profoundly affected Bill and directly led to his own spiritual experience weeks later, which marked the beginning of his sobriety on December 11, 1934. Bill later credited Ebby as the bearer of the message that saved his life, even though Ebby himself struggled with sobriety in later years.
In “In Remembrance of Ebby,” Bill writes with compassion and realism—honoring Ebby’s role without romanticizing his struggles. The piece is both a tribute and a meditation on grace, friendship, and the imperfect humanity behind AA’s beginnings.
