I AM RESPONSIBLE: The Hand of AA - Selected Stories from the AA Grapevine

This book was published by The AA Grapevine, Inc in 2005.

Here you can read the Foreword to learn more about this book:

When AA's Responsibility Declaration was presented to the Fellowship at the 30th International Convention in Toronto, Canada, in 1965, it gave voice to the deep and abiding aspiration of recovering alcoholics around the world. In just a few simple words, it captured the essence of the Fellowship - one alcoholic sharing with another — and provided a fundamental building block for the future of the Fellowship. One hand reaching out for the next — a chain reaction of help, healing, and hope.

For those who have reached out for help, alone and afraid, and been met with the firm, supportive hand of AA, the Responsibility Declaration is an emblem of the lifeline that saved them. And for those AAs, sober now, who have taken that outstretched hand into their own, the Declaration is but one small installment on the debt each owes to the Fellowship of AA.

The thirty-eight stories in this volume take a look at the impact of AA's Responsibility Declaration and what it means to individuals and to the Fellowship as a whole. Written by AA members and nonalcoholic friends of the Fellowship, the articles explore what it's like to take responsibility, for ourselves and for others. Carrying the message to those who still suffer, learning how to stay sober ourselves, and finding ways to keep AA alive and growing are the principal activities that consume us as AA members. As we extend the hand of AA, responsibility becomes the bedrock upon which happy and purposeful lives can be built.

To set the stage for the stories in this volume, we present some opening thoughts from AA's co-founder, Bill W., writing from the vantage point of AA's twenty-fifth anniversary, sharing his perspective on AA's progress and prospects for the future. In this visionary article, "The Shape of Things to Come," Bill says: "While we need not alter our basic truths, we can surely improve their application to ourselves, to AA as a whole, and to our relation with the world around us. We can constantly step up the practice of these principles in all our affairs.'"

And for that, we are all responsible.
