A Workable Solution to the Problem of Alcoholism

 Alcoholism, as a personal problem of man, has existed in all times and places.

No mass of literature or history, modern or ancient, is without reference to it. It has afflicted all classes and manner of men.

Medicine and society, in the past have found alcoholism an inexplicable and insoluble puzzle, yielding only in rare and individual cases to any method of treat-ment. This was true of the past. Since 1935, through the organization Alcoholics Anonymous, a new and encouraging page has been unfolded.

In all parts of our country there are thousands of alcoholics, former “problem drinkers" —men and women of good talent, whose excessive use of liquor had brought them to disaster and despair. Jobs were gone, homes were disrupted, and dignity and self. respect had been destroyed. Today these same people are fully recovered, back in their rightful places in society, living in security, peace and renewed self-confidence.

Among them are former drunks who had taken every "cure" no matter how expensive, often over and over again, but always without success. Others among them had known confinement in asylums for long periods, only to resume drinking when they were released Oched, hrough rink induced oney, bad doorways—derelicts of "skid row."

Their sudden return to sanity and sobriety, apparently without anything to account for their recovery, seems a miracle to those who know them. The seeming miracle is explained by the fact that these people have found a new way of life—a way of life for which they give credit to ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS.
