Children of the Healer by Bob and Sue Smith - Third Printing 1998
Children of the Healer: The Story of Dr. Bob’s Kids by Bob Smith and Sue Smith Windows as told to P. Christine Brewer.
This book is the third Hazelden printing from 1998. This book was first published in 1992 and first published by Hazelden in 1994.
The children of Dr. Bob Smith, cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous, give a first-person account of the miracle that took place in Akron, Ohio, in 1935, when Dr. Bob had his historic meeting with Bill Wilson. In the years that followed, Bob and Sue would learn that their father's recovery did not ensure their own.
Here is the Foreword:
“Only two people are still alive from the time when Bill Wilson came to Akron and, with Dr. Bob Smith, founded Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.).
They are Sue Smith Windows, who still lives in Akron, and Bob Smith, who now lives in lexas. As they tell their stories for the first time, they give eyewitness accounts of the birth of Twelve Step recovery.
By recording life inside the house at 855 Ardmore Avenue in 1935 and beyond, Sue and Bob paint a powerful picture of how one person's recovery is not that of the family, and how each family member must find the answers for him- or herself. The struggles and founding of Alcoholics Anonymous in their home provide the backdrop.
Sue and Bob requested that their stones be told in the first person, just as their father's and others' are told in the Big Book of A.A. Thus, their stories are presented without analysis or psychological interpretation.“
