IN THIS EARNEST FIRESIDE TALK BETWEEN A leading American pastor and the reader, the problems that the young pastor faces are tackled frankly and with compassion.
The gap between seminary and ministry is increasing, says Dr. Shoemaker. For three years the seminary pours into the minds of its young men historical, theological and psychological facts and theories. When the newly ordained clergyman arrives at his first parish, difficulties often arise as he attempts to translate his learning into a vital sermon or into a helpful conversation about some specific human need. Samuel Shoemaker's book is written to bridge that gap so the young man about to begin his ministry can take fullest advantage of "the greatest opportunity that life can present to any man.
In a vivid, bracing manner Dr. Shoemaker covers every aspect of a beginning ministry, including:
FIRSTHAND TOUCH WITH CONVERSION
GOD USES MANY KINDS OF MEN
THE ASSISTANT
PARISH TRADITIONS
"LAY POPES"
LITURGICAL REVISION
INVENTORY AND CONCRETENESS IN DECISION
THE KEEPING OF CONFIDENCES
HOW BEGIN A GROUP?
ESCAPISM IN THE CHURCH
GOD AND BUSINESS
AWAKENING IN THE PARISH
THE SELF-RIGHTEOUS MINORITY
"In this new book, one of the great contemporary writers in the field of personal religion and church life makes available to younger men a wealth of experience from his own remarkable ministry in helping countless men and women find a 'faith that works.' In his stories of living people and the kind of situations which every clergyman must face-illustrations which abound in the book—the reader finds practical counterparts to, and the fulfillment of, much of historical and theoretical content of the classroom work of the candidate for the ministry.
In writing of the application of faith to life, the author thus offers invaluable aid, not always easily available, both to seminary students and to younger men considering the ministry as a vocation. Furthermore, many men already active as leaders in the Church will find in this book perspective and a new vision which they may very greatly need."
