PRIVATE MEMO: Publisher to Bookseller
Please do not put OFF THE SAUCE with your cook books. This kind of sauce has nothing to do with gravy.
It refers to spirits, intoxicants - uh - booze! Any of the following departments should do nicely:
HUMOR If you've ever read a Lewis Meyer book you know that he is a master of the light touch and has a knack for making readers laugh out loud.
INSPIRATION There is compassion in this book, a love for one's fellow man, and hope for everyone - drunk or sober, old or young.
AUTOBIOGRAPHY It is an extremely frank memoir about a man's life on the sauce and off it.
Wherever you put it, OFF THE SAUCE will bring pleasure to anyone who picks it up. It's that rare thing: a "fun" book ... with something to say!
OFF THE SAUCE begins with these words: "This book is as loose as a goose and immensely personal." Those who know Lewis Meyer will tell you that he, too, is "as loose as a goose" .. and "immensely personal." You name it, he's done it. He's a writer Preposterous Papa has sold a million copies in all editions), a TV personality, a Phi Beta Kappa (Dartmouth College), and a lawyer (University of Michigan Law School). He makes his headquarters in his famous Lewis Meyer Book Store in Tulsa (which inspired his best seller, The Customer Is Always). He has a beautiful French wife, two lovely daughters and a cat named Shah. He is a native Oklahoman who shocked the home folks with his novel, Second Wife ("I thought it was real - they thought it was sexy."). He has been a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 19 years.

A STATEMENT FROM THE AUTHOR
This book is my love song to Alcoholics Anonymous.
I do not consider myself any great shakes as a success — but whatever I have accomplished in life I owe to A.A. My greatest reward would come from someone's picking this book up for kicks... and deciding that if A.A. has done all this for me it can do it for him or her, too.
The question I had to decide was whether or not to use my own name on this book. There are arguments both ways. Some may criticize me for "breaking my anonymity" — but my experience has been that I have been able to help many more people simply because I let it be known that I was an A.A. Every member's anonymity is sacred, and it should be presumed that he wants to be anony-mous. But if that member himself wishes to reveal that he is an A.A. it should be his privilege to do so.
I applied my chapter "60-40" to my own problem. The "majority rule" said I could help more people by speaking out. I was still seeking the right answer. I thought, argued, talked with A.A. friends and then turned it over to God. My answer came (as it always does) and now I know that what I did was right.
Lewis Meyer.
