The purpose of this book is to discuss the significance of the essential Christian experience, with special reference to Jesus himself. This involves a discussion of the conditions necessary to any solution of the problem, followed by a careful study of the position given to Jesus in the period of the New Testament, in the Church, and in present-day individual devotion. The facts of history and of experience are then examined in the light of modern psychological knowledge. The history of the doctrine of the Incarnation is sketched in outline, and the formula of orthodox Christianity are used as material for a more thorough analysis in modern terms. It is argued that no final philosophical interpretation can be given of the Christian experience, but that it is self-vindicating, and that it must be taken fully into account by any philosophy that is true. Further, it must issue in right practice, and thus the last section of the book is concerned with the claim which Jesus of Nazareth makes upon the Church and upon the individual Christian. L. W. Grensted was a professor of the Philosophy of Christian Religion in the University Of Oxford.
