This historic November 1948 edition of the "Grapevine," the international journal of Alcoholics Anonymous, is an exceptional artifact not only because of its content but also due to the extraordinary signatures it bears. The cover of this well-preserved, 32-page publication showcases the autographs of Bill Wilson, Dr. Bob Smith, and Lois Wilson—three pivotal figures in the history of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon.

Bill Wilson, co-founder of AA, has signed using his full name in blue ink—a rarity, as he typically reserved his full signature for occasions outside of AA circles. Adjacent to his signature, in a touching display of partnership, his wife Lois Wilson added "& Lois," linking their contributions and roles in the development of support networks for both alcoholics and their families. Directly below, the signature of Dr. Bob Smith, also in blue ink, appears. Given that Dr. Bob's opportunities for autographs were limited due to his passing in 1950, his signature on the same item as Bill & Lois is incredibly rare.

Content-wise, the magazine is significant for containing an article by Bill W. on the 12th Tradition, which is central to AA's principles of anonymity and humility. The inclusion of this article in a signed edition makes it a cornerstone piece for collectors and historians alike.

The convergence of these elements—autographs of foundational figures, a pivotal article, and detailed provenance—makes this November 1948 "Grapevine" a rare and invaluable piece of AA history. It represents not just the origins and early thoughts of the AA movement but also embodies the spirit of recovery and community that Bill Wilson, Lois Wilson, and Dr. Bob Smith sought to foster. This edition is a treasure, providing incredible insight into the legacy and enduring impact of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon.

In the mid-1980s, this copy of the Grapevine was presented to the West Virginia chapter of A.A. Written in purple ink near the top of the front cover is the notation, "Donated By Gene Newland - June 9, 1984." The penmanship, however, is far removed from the important triumvirate of signatures. A similar notation is scripted on the first page of the publication, with a longer description about its dispensation penned on the inside cover. Dr. Bob Smith passed away in 1950; Bill Wilson died in 1971 and his wife Lois (the founder of Al-Anon) passed away in 1989.

This Grapevine comes with a Letter of Authenticity for the signatures.
