Experience, Strength & Hope — First Edition, First Printing (April 2003)

Stories from the First Three Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous

This is a First Printing of the First Edition, published in April 2003, and represents one of the most important companion volumes ever issued alongside the Big Book. Long requested by A.A. members and archivists, Experience, Strength & Hope gathers 56 stories that originally appeared in the first three editions of Alcoholics Anonymous but were later removed as revisions were made to the Big Book over the years.

For decades, these personal accounts existed only within out-of-print early editions. With the approach of the Fourth Edition of the Big Book, the General Service Conference approved a standalone volume to preserve and honor these vital pieces of A.A.’s early narrative. This 2003 First Printing is the very first of those releases.

The book opens with stories from the original 1939 pioneers — members whose sobriety was often counted in months, not years — men and women who were still discovering the path as they walked it. Their writing is raw, uncertain, joyous, and deeply hopeful. Later sections include stories published in the 1955 Second Edition and the 1976 Third Edition, reflecting a fellowship that had expanded across the world and matured in its understanding of alcoholism and recovery.

Bill W. emphasized the importance of these narratives, calling the story section of the Big Book “our principal means of identifying with the reader... the written equivalent of hearing speakers at an A.A. meeting.” This volume restores those voices and preserves an essential part of A.A.’s collective memory.
