My Years with Narcotics Anonymous: A History of N.A.

by Bob Stone
Hulon Pendleton Publishing, 1997
Softcover, First Edition

This is My Years with Narcotics Anonymous, a detailed and historically significant account of the early development of Narcotics Anonymous, written by Bob Stone, former Executive Director of the NA World Service Office.

Unlike most NA historical material, this book was not published by NA World Services. Stone was a non-addict and non-member of NA, yet uniquely positioned through his nine years as Executive Director of the World Service Office, giving him unprecedented access to NA’s leadership, archives, and formative discussions.

About the Book

Stone combines personal experience with extensive historical research, documenting:

  • The emergence of NA as we know it beginning in California in 1953

  • Earlier, lesser-known drug recovery movements rooted in Lexington, Kentucky and New York City in the 1940s

  • The internal struggles, controversies, and personality conflicts that shaped NA’s service structure

  • The creation of NA literature and World Services during periods of rapid growth and instability

Written with a deliberate attempt at fairness and objectivity, the book gives credit where due while openly addressing difficult chapters in NA’s early history. As Stone recognized that many founding members were aging or passing away, he conducted extensive interviews and preserved firsthand accounts that might otherwise have been lost.

Bob Stone died in 1996, before the book was published, making this work his final contribution to the historical record of Narcotics Anonymous.

Notes for Collectors

This title is out of print and increasingly difficult to find. It is regarded as one of the most important independent historical accounts of Narcotics Anonymous and is especially sought after by NA historians, long-time members, and recovery literature collectors.
