Saturday Evening Post from January 1962 - The Housewife’s Secret Sickness
Saturday Evening Post - The Housewife’s Secret Sickness article by Don Murray in the January 27th, 1962 issue.
This piece brings up the “secret sickness” referring to how women alcoholics would often hide their alcoholism and not seek help for their problem. This popular national article is an important piece in normalizing the discussion around alcoholic women seeking help and not keeping it a secret. Several women were interviewed in this article including Marty Mann, AA Member and the founder of the National Council on Alcoholism, as well as Mrs. Thomas Delaney, founder and director of CHRILL(“chronically ill”) Service and its alcoholism information center in East Orange, New Jersey. These interviews and the article as a whole shared insight into alcoholism and recovery from a woman’s perspective.
