Here you can read the forward to learn more about this book:
“A TWENTY-FIFTH anniversary has come to have a kind of organic importance of its own-no matter what it celebrates. A quarter of a century is always an appropriate place to stop and look back, to pause and look forward, to savor, to commemorate.
And that was the task your editors, in their innocence, began months ago as the first quarter century rolled around in the life of Alcoholics Anonymous. We asked our fellows and friends to assist in the preparation of this commemoration. Just that and nothing more.
But something happened, even as it does in all AA undertakings. The group took over; the book took on a life of its own as its diverse components began to accumulate.
We found that far beyond our original amorphous idea, it had in total substance become a kind of study of a latter-day movement of survival. And it took on another characteristic. Far from being a picture of bare survival, it showed again to us a deeper nature, a capability of growth, strong and straight and inevitably upward. In these ideas for today were the accumulations of the past and the promise of the future.
Our task became what may be ultimately impossible: to communicate what has come to us from the four corners of man's contemporary experience in this demonstration, and to share with you without distortion this total message for today.
Being AAs ourselves, we have naturally hit upon the form of communication that has been effective in our own survival, our schooling in our new way of life. The arrangement of the various parts of this volume is roughly, therefore, the arrangement of a regular anniversary meeting of our fellowship at which our friends, both non-alcoholics and alco-holics, are asked to contribute their thoughts and observations to the central theme; and to contribute them in their own way, as their personal opinions.
Following AA custom, then, our co-founder Bill W. opens (page 7) and closes (page 106) our twenty-fifth anniversary commemorative publication.
