Alcoholics Anonymous — Second Edition (1955) | Fifth Printing, 1962

Publisher: Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. | New York City, 1962

Hardcover with Original Dust Jacket

This is the Fifth Printing (1962) of the Second Edition (1955) of Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How Many Thousands of Men and Women Have Recovered from Alcoholism — the foundational text of the A.A. Fellowship, often referred to as “The Big Book.”

The Second Edition represents a pivotal era in A.A. history, marking the Fellowship’s growth from a small circle of early members into an international movement. Issued sixteen years after the 1939 First Edition, this 1955 revision was authorized by the General Service Conference of Alcoholics Anonymous and reflects both the maturity and the expanding global reach of A.A.

While the original text (pages 1–164) remains virtually unchanged — preserving the Twelve Steps, the program of recovery, and the early insights of the founders — this edition includes significant updates: A revised Foreword detailing the Fellowship’s expansion to over 6,000 groups and more than 150,000 members worldwide. A completely new Personal Stories section, adding 110,000 words of fresh material, including Part II, “They Stopped in Time,” which reflects the experiences of newer members. Expanded appendices documenting the Twelve Traditions, endorsements from medical and religious leaders, and the growing recognition of A.A. across the globe.

A distinctive and memorable note appears on all Second Edition dust jackets:

“If you wish to preserve complete personal anonymity when carrying this book, just turn this jacket inside out. It has been especially designed for your convenience.”

This practical anonymity feature has become one of the most charming historical hallmarks of the Big Book’s early printings.

Printing Identification: This copy is confirmed as the Fifth Printing (1962) by the statement on the copyright page and the code “40M-462(C)” printed at the bottom of the back flap of the dust jacket — a detail unique to this printing.

Condition: This copy is in good condition with the original dust jacket present. The jacket retains its deep navy color and bold lettering, showing small edge tears and minor wear consistent with age. The blue cloth boards are clean but show some light staining and handling marks. The interior is clean and unmarked, with tight binding and light, even toning throughout.
