For collectors of early Narcotics Anonymous literature, this is an especially desirable edition of a book that would go on to become a lasting part of everyday N.A. recovery life.

The Development of Just for Today

The foreword explains that Just for Today was the culmination of nearly a decade of work within the N.A. Fellowship.

Interest in creating a daily meditation book began shortly after approval of the Narcotics Anonymous Basic Text in 1982. Between 1984 and 1989, hundreds of individual members and local literature committees contributed nearly a thousand pages of source material.

During 1989 and 1990, the World Service Conference Literature Committee began organizing and developing that material into daily readings. By November 1991, the manuscript was complete, and the finished book was published the following year.

This first printing therefore represents the earliest published form of a meditation book that would become deeply familiar throughout the N.A. Fellowship.

A Daily Companion to the N.A. Program

Just for Today contains a meditation for each day of the year, with readings centered on recovery, spiritual growth, meetings, sponsorship, service, honesty, vigilance, acceptance, and living the principles of Narcotics Anonymous one day at a time.

Each reading concludes with a short “Just for today” statement, giving the reader a practical thought or intention to carry into the day.

The introductory material also explains that N.A. groups could incorporate readings from the book into regular meeting formats or even organize meetings around individual daily meditations.

The January 1 reading, “Vigilance,” opens the book with a message that reflects one of its central themes: recovery requires continued attention, spiritual practice, and active participation in the N.A. way of life.
