Cleveland Central Bulletin — November 1952 Vol. XI, No. 2 — Early Cleveland A.A. History

Offered here is the November 1952 issue of the Central Bulletin, the official publication of Alcoholics Anonymous in the Cleveland area.

The most historically significant feature in this issue is an article titled “Training Meeting Plans,” which describes a proposed twelve-week educational program for newcomers and prospective members.

The Proposed “Training Meeting”

According to the article, the Cleveland Central Committee had begun exploring a structured training program inspired by a similar effort in Toronto, Canada.

The proposed course would give each prospect “a complete picture of AA” through twelve weekly sessions. Each meeting was planned to include four speakers:

• One speaker sharing how he qualified as an alcoholic
• One speaker addressing a single Twelve Step
• One speaker discussing a single Twelve Tradition
• A moderator summarizing the presentations

The proposal further suggested that a newcomer would not be officially added to a group roster until completing the course, although the person could still attend regular A.A. meetings during that period.

The article reflects the very different local customs and membership practices being considered during A.A.’s early years. It also reveals concern among Cleveland members that many people entering the Fellowship did not fully understand the Steps, Traditions, or limitations surrounding A.A. service positions.

Although this was a proposed Cleveland-area plan rather than a universal A.A. policy, it provides an unusual glimpse into the trial-and-error process through which local groups attempted to educate newcomers and protect the still-developing Fellowship.

Condition

This bulletin is in very good condition for its age.

There is light edge wear, age toning, and a small tear at the top of the pages. A horizontal fold line is visible across the bulletin, consistent with storage or mailing. The pages remain complete and highly readable.
