Manual on Alcoholism of the American Medical Association - 1967

This book is in excellent condition with some minor wear. There is a name handwritten on the inside front cover and stamps on the title page.

Preface:

The first Manual on Alcoholism of the American Medical Association originated as a series of four articles appearing in the Journal in 1956 and 1957. At the suggestion of the Committee on Alcoholism, and with the approval of the Council on Mental Health, these were combined into pamphlet form for distribution to the medical profession. The first edition appeared in 1957, and the second edition, with only minor changes in the text, followed in 1962.

Even though it was well received, the need for major revision in its form and content became increasingly apparent during recent years. In 1965, an editorial advisory committee with Ruth Fox, M.D., Leon Greenberg, Ph.D., and Mr. Mark Keller assisted Dale C. Cameron, M.D., the Chairman of the then Committee on Alcoholism and Addiction, and AMA staff members in formulating a preliminary outline of proposed material for a new manual. In addition, a list of possible contributors was developed from a roster of experts, whose views would accurately reflect currently accepted thinking about alcoholism and the treatment of alcoholic patients.

Thirteen of these authorities submitted resource information upon which the new manual could be based. Each agreed to forfeit any authorship credit, with the knowledge that the material would be extracted and completely rewritten, in order to facilitate a unified style and continuity of thought.

The proffered manuscripts were evaluated by members of the Committee and the Council as to appropriateness for inclusion into a manual intended for the practicing physician. Preliminary work was then performed by Mr. Wayne Callaway, a senior student at the Northwestern University School of Medicine, in gathering additional materials and implementing some of the original suggestions of the committee.

Robert J. Shearer, M.D., Associate Director of the Department of Mental Health, was responsible for the subsequent and final development of the contents and the actual writing of the manual. He had the difficult burden of reconciling the views of the contributors and meeting the dictates of the Committee that this Manual be eclectic and compendious while maintaining clarity and readability. He succeeded admirably.

Doctor Cameron helped review the many recommendations and suggestions of the contributors and members of the Committee and Council. His suggestions and proposals along with those of the Committee members were valuable in guiding the development of the manual and were of primary significance in aiding Dr. Shearer resolve problems relating to content.

The manuscript has been carefully reviewed and is approved by the AMA Council on Mental Health and its Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

The Manual therefore represents the combined efforts of many persons who gave generously of their knowledge, skills and time in its preparation. Grateful acknowledgement is made to each one.
