The Hangover
A CRITICAL STUDY IN THE PSYCHODYNAMICS OF ALCOHOLISM
By
BENJAMIN KARPMAN, M.D.
1957
“A frank and penetrating study of the lives of seven men and seven women alcoholics in which the 'hangover"' is shown to be symptomatic of the specific underlying personality disorders which lead to alcoholism. This is a new approach since previously the hangover has been taken for granted or treated as a subject for typical alcoholic jokes. Dr. Karp-man's study shows that analysis of the hangover yields val uable clues as to the nature of the personality maladjust-ment. Individual differences in the reaction of alcohol are clearly shown in the hangover period.
Much of the material is in the words of the men and women concerned and they discuss freely the interplay of problems connected with family, sex, employment and their social life. The material presented will be valuable to workers in many fields of the social sciences as well as to psychiatrists.
The discussions and comparisons of the cases by Dr. Karp-man throw new light on the problem of alcoholism and this objective and scientific approach serves to dispel many false popular notions that becloud the issue.
The Hangover is a new approach to the problem of alcohol-ism. Little attention has been paid in the past to this aspect of alcoholism, but the present work, the first to approach the problem through consideration of the hangover, shows that the type of hangover is closely related to and symptomatic of the underlying personal problems. The hangover is highly individualistic, no two are alike.
In their own words, seven men and seven women alcoholics discuss their family life, their sexual problems, t eir employment and social difficulties. They give an accurate and often a moving account of the miseries and sometimes the terror of the hangover. This personal and intimate account gives a very revealing picture of the problems that the alcoholic faces and provides material that will be invaluable to the physician, psychiatrist, clergyman, lawyer, social worker, teacher, psychologist and all others who come in contact with the problem of alcohoi.sm.
The discussions of each case by Dr. Karpman and the comparisons between the various individuals contribute to a new and deeper understanding of the emotional and personality factors that make these persons resort to alcohol. The complexity of the problem is clearly shown and the fallacy of many popular ideas revealed. This account offers much to the student of personality and behavior disorders.”
