This is an early American edition (1909) of Twice Born Men: A Clinic in Regeneration by Harold Begbie, a landmark study in spiritual psychology and early conversion research. The book is dedicated to Professor William James, author of The Varieties of Religious Experience, and includes a narrative footnote referencing his influence.
About the Book
In this pioneering work, journalist and psychologist Harold Begbie explores the transformative power of religious experience through a series of real-life case studies. Inspired by William James’s psychological approach to faith, Begbie enters a London slum district to document the lives of men whose characters were dramatically changed through conversion experiences in the Salvation Army.
Twice Born Men presents nine accounts of men once known as habitual drunkards and criminals who, through a spiritual awakening, were “born again” into lives of moral strength, service, and compassion. Begbie’s reflections merge psychological observation with moral insight, making this volume one of the earliest attempts to present Christian conversion as a legitimate subject for scientific and sociological study.
As Begbie concludes: “When I visit the happy homes and experience the gentleness, kindness and refinement of such people as those whose life-stories appear in this book… I am astonished that the world should be so incredulous about religion, and that legislation should be so foolish as to attempt to do laboriously by enactments… what might be done instantly and easily by religion.”
