The Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox
The Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox
Published by Harper & Brothers, New York and London | Undated Early Edition
An early Harper edition of The Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox (1886–1951) — one of the most widely read spiritual texts of the 20th century and a foundational influence on Alcoholics Anonymous.
Originally published in 1934, this enduring work presents Fox’s clear and practical interpretation of Jesus’s teachings in Matthew chapters 5–7. It offers what he called “a general introduction to Scientific Christianity,” focusing on spiritual law, personal transformation, and the creative power of thought. Fox’s explanation of principles such as “as a man thinketh” and “by their fruits ye shall know them” provided spiritual tools that deeply influenced early A.A. members and shaped the fellowship’s understanding of the Sermon on the Mount as a guide for living.
Historical Context:
Emmet Fox was born in Ireland in 1886 and educated in London before coming to the United States in 1931 to serve as minister of the Divine Science Church of the Healing Christ in New York. Preaching during the Great Depression to crowds of over 5,000 at the Hippodrome and later the Astor Hotel, Fox became one of America’s most influential spiritual voices. His teachings were widely read among Oxford Group members and early A.A. pioneers, who drew inspiration from his emphasis on forgiveness, love, and the transformation of thought through prayer.
