After a long period of material progress and outward expansion, modern man is beginning to look within himself once more. His whole attitude toward the values of life has changed within the last two decades. It is very generally agreed that the western world stands on the verge of a spiritual rebirth.
But concerning the sources of this rebirth there is no agreement. Those who uphold revealed religion foretell a renaissance of Catholicism or Protestant-ism. Another great group believes that the new attitude will be attained by the total destruction of religion; religion to them is a relic of superstitious barbarism. Let man, they say, rely upon reason alone.
Between these two extremes stand those who know they have outgrown the Church as exemplified in Christianity but to whom a religious attitude toward life is essential. They are convinced that if they can attain to more knowledge of the inner workings of their own minds, of the subtle but none the less perfectly definite laws that govern the psyche, they can achieve the new attitude that is de manded of them. It is to this group that Jung speaks in convincing terms.
This book is, perhaps, the most important contribution that C. G. Jung has made in recent years. It represents, in a fund of information applicable to every-one, a synthesis of his knowledge gained in his years of practice as psychiatrist and analyst.
