Sobriety and Beyond

By Father John Doe (Father Ralph Pfau)

Indianapolis, Indiana: SMT Publishing Co., Inc., 1955.

Second Printing — March 1956

Description:

Father Ralph Pfau—writing under the pseudonym Father John Doe—was a pioneering figure in early Alcoholics Anonymous literature and is widely believed to have been the first Roman Catholic priest to join A.A. Sobriety and Beyond expands upon the principles of recovery, guiding readers through the emotional and spiritual growth that follows initial sobriety. Pfau emphasizes humility, acceptance, and ongoing spiritual awakening as vital steps toward lasting recovery and serenity.

Written in his trademark style—direct, wise, and compassionate—this volume became a cornerstone in mid-century recovery reading and was frequently discussed in A.A. meetings and retreats. Its insights continue to resonate with those pursuing not just sobriety, but genuine transformation.

Father Pfau also authored the beloved Golden Books series, which remain influential in A.A. study circles and recovery retreats to this day.

Condition:

Very Good book in a Fair to Good dust jacket. The dust jacket shows noticeable wear, including edge chipping, creasing, and tears, but remains mostly intact and legible. The navy blue boards with gilt lettering are clean and sturdy, with a small library tape label on the spine and minor evidence of former library use. Binding is solid, and pages are clean with only mild age toning.

A significant early A.A.-related title by one of the fellowship’s most respected spiritual teachers — a true cornerstone in the literature of recovery.
