The Sister Ignatia Collection
Two Personally Inscribed Books & A.A. Historical Material
Two books inscribed by Sister Ignatia in 1948 and 1957 preserve her personal words of blessing and gratitude. Together with photographs, devotional objects, and related historical material, they offer a closer look at the woman whose work alongside Dr. Bob helped bring compassionate hospital care to alcoholics.

A Personal Blessing, 1948
The Following of Christ · Inscribed October 31, 1948
Sister Ignatia presented this devotional volume to Harry Steiner during the years she worked alongside Dr. Bob at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron.
Her handwritten blessing asks that Steiner and his family remain close to the Sacred Heart. She closes with a personal request: “Please say a little prayer for me.”
The inscription preserves both her spiritual encouragement and her willingness to ask for prayers herself—a personal expression of the faith that informed her care for alcoholics.
The Caregiver as a Grateful Patient
Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age · First Printing, 1957
Inscribed October 24, 1957
Sister Ignatia fills the front endpaper with a personal message thanking a physician for his understanding and professional care. Signing as his “grateful patient,” she offers a glimpse of the celebrated caregiver receiving care herself.
The inscription appears in a First Printing of A.A.’s own history—a history she helped shape through her work with Dr. Bob. The book retains its original dust jacket.

Devotional Objects, Photographs & Historical Material
A vintage Confidence in God booklet and Sacred Heart badge represent the spiritual encouragement associated with Sister Ignatia’s care for alcoholics. These particular examples have no established provenance linking them to her personal ownership or distribution.
Two photographs provide a visual connection to her life and work. An annotated 1973 Rosary Hall meeting schedule reflects Cleveland’s continuing recovery community, while Mary C. Darrah’s 1992 biography documents her life and lasting contribution to alcoholism treatment.
Together, these pieces provide context for the collection’s two personally inscribed books.
