Offered here is What Is the Oxford Group? by “The Layman with a Notebook,” Second Impression, November 1933, published in London by Oxford University Press, Humphrey Milford. The book includes a foreword by L. W. Grensted and is accompanied by a reproduction dust jacket.

The publication explains Oxford Group practices through chapters on confession, surrender, restitution and guidance, followed by discussion of the Four Absolutes. Issued before the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, it is a contemporary source for the religious and practical vocabulary that formed part of early A.A.’s background.

The copyright leaf records the first impression in October 1933 and this second impression in November 1933. The accompanying jacket is a reproduction, not an original 1933 jacket.

Condition

The cloth shows rubbing and wear along the board edges and corners, with substantial browning and fading to the spine and wear at its ends. The endpapers have toning, scattered spotting and a small penciled notation. Foxing and discoloration are visible on the photographed preliminary and text pages, particularly toward the margins and lower edges.

The reproduction jacket supplies the title design for display. Its illustrated appearance should be considered separately from the condition of the original 1933 book.

Collector’s Notes

An early British impression of a title closely associated with Oxford Group literature. Its value lies in the 1933 book and printing identification; the reproduction jacket adds display context without constituting an original period jacket.
