Prayer and Evangelism by Helen Smith Shoemaker — 1974, Inscribed Copy
Offered here is an inscribed paperback copy of Prayer and Evangelism by Helen Smith Shoemaker, published by Word Books of Waco, Texas, with a 1974 copyright. The preliminary page bears her handwritten inscription to Elise.
Helen Smith Shoemaker was an author and a founder of the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer, whose work included prayer groups, conferences, and schools of prayer. Her husband, the Episcopal minister Samuel M. Shoemaker, was a leading American figure in the Oxford Group and an important spiritual influence on Bill Wilson and early Alcoholics Anonymous.
This book presents Helen Shoemaker’s own approach to Christian prayer and witness. Its chapters consider Jesus in prayer, group prayer, obstacles to prayer, and the relationship between inward spiritual life and outward action. Its interest to recovery-history collectors lies in that wider Shoemaker tradition of practical faith, fellowship, and service.
Author’s Inscription
The handwritten inscription reads “to Elise” and “with love + prayers,” followed by Helen Smith Shoemaker’s signature. The recipient has not been further identified.
