A signed copy of one of the most recognized books written by Marty Mann, a pioneering figure in the history of alcoholism education and recovery advocacy.

Originally published in 1950 and revised by Mann in 1958, Marty Mann’s New Primer on Alcoholism was written to help readers understand alcoholism as an illness, recognize its symptoms, and identify practical paths toward treatment and recovery. The book discusses the causes of alcoholism, common misconceptions surrounding the alcoholic, methods of intervention, and the possibility of lasting recovery.

Marty Mann was among the earliest women to achieve continuous sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous. She later founded the National Committee for Education on Alcoholism—now known as the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence—and devoted much of her life to changing the public understanding of alcoholism from a moral failing to a treatable illness.

This copy was personally inscribed by Mann on the front free endpaper:

To RuthYours in AAMarty (Mann)Jan. 18, 1977

The inscription’s closing, “Yours in AA,” gives the book an especially meaningful connection to Mann’s personal recovery and her lifelong work within the broader alcoholism field.
